‘On the Path of Life’

On the Path of Life:

We walk among each other.

Can we even begin to comprehend
how many faces that we have seen?
Eyes that we’ve dodged,
hands that we have brushed
Strolling down our own roads?

How many hearts we’ve passed beating
in the same rhythm as our own -
Some thumping harder, fists punching its walls
trying to break free of their chests
Some calmly pumping, others erratic,
Out of sync-
As we saunter along our own paths.

What about the number of footsteps
That our ears have heard?
Some overlapping in a symphony
Others standing out,
pounding the ground.
Some drowned out,
gliding over the concrete
Others in a rush, not staying for too long
and skimming the stones
On the ground that we pace along.

Or imagine the countless breaths
That have touched our skins,
The lives that we have passed
As our roads diverge and cross.
