10 Gift Ideas For Any Occasion

Beauty, Fashion, Favourites

With Christmas just around the corner you’re probably thinking about what to get for the special people in your life. It can be difficult buying presents for people for any occasion particularly if you are under a tight budget. Here are a couple of my favourite unique finds…

For the Tavel lover – Scratch Map

917OTaZsNhL._SL1500_.jpg

They can scratch off the places they’ve been on the map and plan trips they hope to go to. The idea is that they will try to scratch off as many places as they can. I have one of these my self and I love it.

If they are a student there are loads of gap year and bucket list books by lonely planet that you can get on amazon or any good book store.

For the book worm – Book cover locket

I think these are so unique, they do a variety of book covers so you could find their favourite classic novel to put on to the locket.

For the film lover – popcorn machine and bags

I mean it is their own cinema at home!

or for the person who wants to get into movies… a scratch off 100 bucket list movies poster

For the music lover – (if they have vinyls) a vinyl frame, new earphones or portable speaker. For the person who I into hearing all the classics there is also a scratch off 100 albums bucket list poster.

For anyone – books

I don’t think anyone can go wrong with a book, it can be about anything they are interested in from gardening to traveling. There are loads of thoughtful books on Urban outfitters if you need some ideas.

For the fashion aficionado – The new fashion rules by Victoria Magrath

I have followed Victoria’s blog for a long time now and she has the most amazing style and knowledge of fashion – definitely something a fashion lover would love to delve into.

For the Make up addict – Makeup storage or a set from their favourite brand. ASOS do some great ones by a variety of brands or if you want to go more upmarket SpaceNK do some beautiful sets as well from bath and body to lipstick and eyeshadows.

For the foodie – something for the kitchen or you can get books of the best places to eat in different cities.

For the sentimental – A photo book

I recommend Snapfish as I have used them before – the quality is really good and they are the cheapest company I can find that do them. I did one for my Dad documenting all the places we had travelled to and adventures we had been on. You can customise the pages yourself, adding text, changing the layout of the pictures and the background.

For anyone – Candles or bath things

Everyone likes gifts that they can use to relax. My favourite bath oils are from Aromatherapy – they can be a bit pricy but smell amazing.

Book club: On My 2018 To Read List

Book Club

One of my resolutions was to read more. I have always loved reading but over the last couple of years schoolwork seems to have taken over and my passion for reading diminished a little. I am currently reading Origin by Dan Brown, an author whose books I have come to love, I’m about half way through and I’m hooked. Now it may be reading over schoolwork!

This is my  ‘to read’ list for the rest of the year…

Sense and sensibility – Jane Austin

I’ve been wanting to read one of Jane Austins novels for a while, I’ve seen the films and I really enjoyed Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austin apparently writes in a similar style. Its also one of those classics that I think will be really interesting to read.

Hidden Figures

The film was incredible, Looking at the women in Science who were behind making the Apollo mission possible but were never recognised at the time. Its supposed to be a really empowering read and a compelling look back into history.

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine

This is currently one of the best sellers on Waterstones and looks like a thought provoking story line.

To kill a mocking bird

This is one of my friends favourite books and she’s been urging for me to read it for a while. Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the thirties through one man’s struggle for justice.

The Da Vinci Code

I am currently reading Origin, which is Dan Browns newest book of the Robert Langdon series, and I read inferno last year but I have never read the earlier books so I really want to read the first book to see where it all started. A lot of people say this is the best one too so really looking forward to reading it later this year.

Wild

I really enjoyed the film and it was a really poignant story about a woman who backpacks across America to find herself. I had wanted to read it before watching the film but I never got round to it – better late than never… right?

The Road

I think I am going to be reading this in English next year along with A handmaids tale and its always good to be ahead 😉 haha

A pair of silver wings

My dad recommended this book to me – he claims it to be one of the best books he’s ever read so i’m looking forward to seeing if I find it as good as he claims it to be.

If you have any book recommendations please let me know! It is such a struggle to find a good book and I hope that my reading list may have helped you. For my other recommendations please see my ‘book club’ section xx

Make up I’m loving…

Beauty, Style

Its now October and feeling very autumnal so today I thought I’d do a post on the makeup I’ve been loving recently.

In terms of eye shadow I’ve been reaching for the more autumnal browns and oranges. So I’ve been loving the urban decay full spectrum palette because I’m completely in love with the yellows and shadow colour’s like midnight blaze that has a slight khaki green undertone to it.

For days when I’m wanting a more neutral look, I love either the Chanel quad (in 204 tisse vendome) or the urban decay Naked original palette. The Chanel palette has some beautiful browns and a really pretty rose gold in it which you can build up to make it more smokey or wear quite naturally. From the Urban Decay palette I love the colour’s smog, darkhorse, toasted and hustle. These are some gorgeous brown and burgundy shades perfect for autumn.

Scent wise I’ve been loving these two from Gucci: Gucci flora and Gucci Guilty. They are both quite fresh and floral scents.

In terms of mascara the Maybelline lash sensational mascara is really the only one I reach for as its affordable and makes the lashes look long and thick but it is quite a clumpy mascara which I quite like but I know some people don’t. Then I use the  soap & Glory supercat eyeliner because its so easy to use and is really black; I’ve used some other eyeliner pens before and they come out a more grey colour and I end up having to apply a few coats of it but with this one it glides on easily and looks great. For eyebrows I use the Bobbi brown eyebrow pencil in the colour Ash, I’m really liking it so far but it is a little pricey so I don’t know if I will buy it again or not? let me know if you know any really good cheaper alternatives. Then sometimes I will use the Tarte tinted brow gel if i’m out for a long time to set the brows in place for a bit longer.

For the foundation I really like the finish of the Bare minerals powder foundation: it makes the skin look really glowy and fresh however it can be a bit drying particularly if you have dry skin. I always put on a good layer of moisturizer before applying it.

Then for highlight i’m loving the Topshop one in the shade crescent moon, it leaves a really beautiful highlight on the face and stays for a long time.

For lips I’ve been wearing this liquid lipstick from NYX in shade 04. Its a really nice rosey- nude that I think will suit a lot of skin tones.

To read about my outfit read my previous blog post 🙂

I hope you enjoyed reading about my current everyday makeup routine and the makeup I’m loving at the moment for autumn. What are you loving? How are you feeling about autumn so far?

Please feel welcome to like and comment, I’d really appreciate it! And let me know what posts you’d like to see in the future 🙂

BOOK REVIEW: Inferno

books, Reviews

I finished reading Inferno whilst on holiday in Nice, France, it was an amazing book simply because it was so thought provoking. Without giving too much away Inferno is basically about a professor helping the WHO to find a potential ‘plaque’ Zobrist could have hidden. The book takes you on a journey around Florence, Venice and Istanbul so is very cultured. I really want to go to Italy now!

I’ve seen the film as well which is still really good but the book is so much better because the ending of the film is very different and the film leaves out many of the details from the book which would probably be too difficult to portray on film.

img_8178.jpg

The main issue this book is based around though is the taboo topic of the increase in human population. The book includes a graph of this increase and how overpopulation can lead to so many issues but how we don’t know how to face the issue in an ethical way.

In my opinion it is something we need to deal with soon because we as humans do have a massive impact on the environment. The more people there are the more cars there need to be on the roads, the more electricity we need to create, the more houses we need to build, the more land we need, the more food we need, the more water we need, the more trees we need to cut down, the more of everything we need.

I kind of think we are the reason for global warming; its not necessarily just the cars we are using and other ways we are producing co2 but we are heating the world. If you think about it every piece of technology we use produces heat as a by product, the more people there are the more people there are using these products. The more people there are the more we have to use intensive farming because there is not enough land for organic farming, the more people there are the more co2 we are producing because that is the product we breathe out along with all other animals, the more heat we are creating because we live so closely together; we could be essentially creating our own greenhouse effect like when penguins huddle together to create heat. Obviously I am no scientist and this is just my opinion.

Maybe we are just so naive to not notice or do anything about the fact that we are the biggest problem facing the world. But I really couldn’t think of any way that we would be able to deal with it anyway.

Have you read inferno? if so what did you think of it x

Festival season

Fashion, Lifestyle, Style, Travel

Its festival season and these are a couple of festivals I’ve been to so far this year…

COMMON PEOPLE FEST

I went to common people festival in May with a few friends, its in Southampton and I think is quite a new festival. Tom Odell was playing and it was incredible. So here are a few photos from the day and as festival season has arrived ( my favorite season) here is what I wore:

Yellow top, cropped joggers, denim jacket, classic vans

CAMP BESTIVAL

I’ve been going to camp bestival for about 7 years and has always been really good. However this year (2017) the line up wasn’t as good and is accommodating much  more to families now as it has child friendly music or music for the parents. But the Sunday was really good; Anne Marie and Louisa Johnson were playing and we even got to meet Anne Marie! I don’t think ill go back, might try it’s sister festival though- Bestival as the line up is normally really good with more of a mixture of music from pop to alternative. Camp Bestival is really good for families though and they always put on an incredible firework display on the last day. I might even try volunteering next year.

Both these festivals are run by the same people so they are both quite similar.

New York Shopping!

accaliasmith.com

Whilst in New York it would have been criminal not to do a little bit of shopping as it is near christmas after all…

img_3873

The first place I was really looking forward to shopping was Bath and Body works, and it did not disappoint. There was an overwhelming number of scents but in the end i went for:

The ‘winter’ candle which smells exactly like the winter candle from the white company (but a hell of a lot cheaper) which basically has ints of pine, orange and a few spices- smells like christmas to me.

img_3884

img_3899

The ‘autumn sky’ candle, which is more musky than than the other candles although very fresh at the same time. It says it has fragrance notes of ‘Crisp Autumn Air, Chilled Mandarin,Crushed Thyme, Amberwood and Black Pepper’.

IMG_3875.jpg

IMG_3877.jpg

img_3888

I also got a few room sprays and hand gels for friends in christmassy scents. If you spent $30 the you also got a free goodie bag worth over $80 so I gave that as a gift to my sister haha. At the moment I am really impressed with the candles as they burn really well and still smell absolutely divine. My friend had  got me a candle from there as well called ‘leaves’ which also smells amazing.

img_3897

Also on the theme of beauty, I went to Sephora (another shop we don’t have in the UK). I got a first aid beauty gift set which had 2 pots go their ultra repair moisturiser (one scented with vanilla and one not) my skin is quite sensitive so i don’t usually opt for the scented products but this set was practically the same price as it was for one pot so it was  a no-brainer to get this set which also included 2 lip balms  (one in clear and one with a rosy tint). I have tried the lip balms out and they are super moisturising and last for about 8 hours!

img_3881

On to a bit of Fashion; I then went to gap, which is so much better than the Gap in England and it really surprised me that I found this gorgeous cozy sweater. Its incredibly soft with a roll neck- my perfect jumper!

IMG_3796.jpg

I also got a blue shirt from Abercrombie and Fitch, it feels like amazing quality and is really comfortable to wear. My favourite part is the gold A and F on the collar as it adds somethings little different to it.

10 Places To Visit In New York!

Lifestyle, Travel

IMG_3872.jpg

Hellooo from New york!

I’ve had such an amazing time staying in Manhattan with the christmas atmosphere, I thought I would share my favourite places to go, to eat and to see…

  1. A must-see is the top of the Empire state building! They have got an observatory room on the 86th floor where you can view New York from the warmth of inside or you can go to the very top on the 102nd floor to see the view from outside like we did to capture the superb view without the glare from the windows.

img_3868

img_3653

2. Another place to go over the christmas period is the Rockefeller centre. The whole place is decorated with christmas decorations and there is the famous Rockefeller christmas tree featured in many christmas films. They also have an ice rink which is smaller than a lot of the others and the most famous, so it is ridiculously busy. The queue was massive even when we got there at 6;30 in the morning! so we went to Starbucks for breakfast instead haha.

They also have an observatory called ‘Top of the Rock’, located on the top of the centre you are supposed to get amazing 360 views of the city as it is very central and right next to times square.

I also cannot believe that it SNOWED!!! It was literally like a dream seeing the magical city covered in snow.

3. Talking about times square…. It was amazing to see the pure hustle and bustle of the city centre although I’m going to be honest, i could only walk through it briefly as it took forever walking through the crowds to get there. aIts really a once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it kind of place. Quickly take a photo have a look at it and leave really.

It is a must do place though if its your first time to see the heart and soul of the busy life in New York, it was an incredible sight.

img_3701

img_3692

4.My favourite and place i could definitely get quite used to is around madison square gardens. It was really relaxed and absolutely beautiful. And they had the best place to get a hot dog, a burger or a milkshake; The shakeshack. Omg The food tasted insane. we were only there for a long weekend and we ate it 3 times over our 3 day break… yup it was that good.

img_3627

img_3626

I made a new friend too… awh hey lil’guy.

img_3836

 5. Just around the corner of madison square gardens is the flatiron building, its such a quirky building and apparently was the first ever skyscraper. You can’t actually go into the building but if you are nearby or on the way to the empire state, it’s definitely a building to see and take a photo of. You won’t believe how thin it is.

img_3631

6. Another place which may not be particularly a tourist attraction (although if you live in the uk and is a MASSIVE love of candles like myself it might be) is Bath and Body Works. oh my lordy this is like candle heaven. The pure amount of amazing scents is immense and overwhelming; this is not your usual yankee candle haha. But if its not candles that rocks your boat, they also do hand gels, shower gels, moisturisers and room sprays. The people are all so friendly as well.

I shall also be doing a haul of what I brought in New York so you can see all the itms I brought 🙂

img_3873

(ohhhhh sneak peak)

7. If in need of a healthy boost Joe and the Juice is a place for you. The atmosphere is lovely and when in need of a delicious pick me up after walking around all day it gave me the energy I needed. There are so many different flavours to choose from and come on the packaging is just incredible too.

img_3775

( i didn’t just eat, i promisee you haha)

8. Central park is a must do. I am such a friends fan I jut kept having Rachel and Phoebe running flashbacks. But it was beautiful in the snow and they have a much larger ice rink. (it was unfortunately shut due to the snow 😦 )

img_3612

img_3622

9. The 9/11 memorial and museum. It was so poignant and emotional, people were crying and seeing all of the victims stories; it was incredible. The memorial itself was very deep, so simple but it really made you think – seeing the exact positions of where the twin towers once were going down into a waterfall – I don’t know there’s just something so significant about it. img_3867

img_3748

img_3747

10. Last but not least, ice skating and 5th avenue shopping.

Yes we finally found a place to Ice skate (and with a view) ! I have officially decided that I could possibly be the worlds worst ice skater but nonetheless it was really fun- probably more entertaining for my dad watching me but oh well.

img_3760

img_3765

When I talk about 5th avenue shopping, I’m not meaning that shopping was my highlight from the trip – not in the least!- I’m talking about the absolutely stunning christmas shop windows! like seriously these are not your ordinary shops, they go all out! one even looked like a disney castle and all the little kids faces were priceless at the sight of them; it left them speechless and even many of the adults speechless too.

Although pictures really don’t capture the magic in it xxx

If you’ve been to New York or are going I’d love to hear all about it, I would definitely go again so please tell me if there are any other hidden gems!
